Scandalous Malawi models in 2012

LILONGWE-Models and beauty queens are regarded as role models in the society but some of them were busy during the year terrorising families, playing up men and falling pregnant while holding high offices.

As the unplanned pregnancies shoved some of the beauty queens out of the limelight, some were busy flirting with married men.

When one thinks of playing up men, the name of former Miss Malawi Faith Chibale quickly comes to mind. She caused a stirafter reports emerged that two men nearly exchanged blows at her residence. It was reported that the two prominent men nearly exchanged blows when they bumped into each other in their quest for the heart of the slim beauty.

However, the socialite – who stormed to fame when she won Malawi News Model of the year 2009 before being crowned Miss Malawi in 2010 – dismissed the incident in The Weekend Times of October 19-21.

“I know I have a lot of friends because I am an extrovert but they are not my boyfriends. We all have friends and it does not make sense to conclude that if you chat with someone, then you are in a relationship,” she said.

Another former Miss Malawi, Irene Nkhwazi, sparked controversy in Lilongwe when she confronted her secret lover.

The Weekend Times reported that Nkhwazi, in the company of a friend, launched a verbal tirade on politician and part-time comedian Lawrence Mlambwaza’s wife in Kawale Township in the city.

Sources said that the cause of Nkhwazi’s action was Mlambwaza’s assault on her on grounds that she was missing at her house when he went to check on her. She was reportedly bitter with the action hence the move to vent her anger on Mlambwaza’s innocent wife in the dead of the night.

But the former beauty queen played down the incident, saying the issue was exaggerated.

In a bid to maintain high moral standards of models in the country, the Times Group – the proud sponsors and organisers of Malawi News Model of the Year – stripped Thoko Kamanga of the crown after it emerged that she was pregnant.

Times Group Sales and Marketing Manager Dumisani Ngulube said models were supposed to carry themselves with a certain degree of moral integrity because they are public figures and role models to young people.

Kamanga was crowned Malawi News Model of the Year 2011 in March this year at a colourful event at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

The landscape of beauty contests in Malawi is littered with (immoral) scandals. From early 1970s to date, each queen has been immersed in scandals. Prove me wrong: can you tell me just 2 beauty queens that are scandal free? I want 2 not 3.
What contribution have these queens made to the social development of our country apart from being poor role models for youth
