LILONGWE (Malawi Democrat)–Angry marchers in the capital Lilongwe have torched offices of billionaire businessman Mr Leston Mulli and the business offices of Information Minister Mr Vuwa Kaunda.
The angry protestors burnt the offices of Chombe Tea owned by Mulli Brother and torched two buses of his National Bus Company.
Mulli, the rapidly rising star of the business community, with a multitude of blossoming investments in goods and passenger transport bankrolls the ruling DPP.
Vuwa auctioneers company’s offices were also set on fire.
Protestors also torched two police houses and two government vehicles.
“The situation is very bad here. They have been running battles between the police and demonstrators. Police have been firing teargas while the marchers have retaliated by setting on fire two police houses and two government vehicles,” said Mike Chipalasa, publicist for the Malawi Human Rights Commission.
“People are angry,” said Chipalasa. “The situation is tense.”
He said a shop belonging to Adams Vinandi, a lawmaker for the ruling Democratic Progress Party, was also looted.
Meanwhile, power blackout disrupted a public lecture by President Bingu wa Mutharika at the New State House. The President however went on speaking as millions were in the country’s streets chanting that he must step down.
Earlier lawyer Mr Mathews Chidzonde obtained the injunction on behalf of Mr Chiza Mbekeani, a Lilongwe resident stopping the demonstrations.
Mbekeani said he did it “in good faith and to save a life or two because I feared deadly crashes between the two rival camps.”
The protest had been called by a coalition of human rights groups to “express alarm regarding the current economic and democratic crises facing Malawi”,
Wa Mutharika, who received praise in during his first term in office for transforming the country’s agricultural sector and bringing about “a unique green revolution”, now finds himself facing widespread dissatisfaction locally and bilaterally.
The country’s petrol stations are now characterised by long queues, and civil servants have gone for months without salaries and economic experts now warn that Malawi may be exhibiting the signs of bankruptcy.

IT seems President Bingu wa Mutharika is trying to redefine our form of
government. Malawi chose multiparty democracy on June 14, 1993 but it
seems Bingu is experimenting on a mish-mash of some wacky form of
democracy that is teetering between democracy and autocracy where some
fundamental principles of democracy are not respected.
They are now eating in the praise and worship gathering at state house. Our money. Tax payers money.
This is just the beggining mr. president. You shall no no peace.
Step down man.
We have always said that there is a limit to which you can stretch people, Malawians have been stretched to the limit, and its unfortunate that the public lecture has brought nothing new, the same old stories which we have been hearing for the past seven years, but people are tired of empty speeches, we need fruits on the ground.
Its high time people like Vuwa, Ntaba etc should come to their senses. We are not kids, yesterday we saw a fleet of five DPP vehicles armed with pangas trying to intimidate people, what was that for and where are they today? Im afraid if you continue living in the theoretical world and thinking that you are untouchable, DPP people, unfaithful chiefs and indeed MBC bootlickers risk facing the wrath of citizens who own Malawi.
Malawians serve a risen saviour, and there is a limit to what earthly powers can suppress Gods people, there were more powerful people like Idi Amin, Gbagbo, Savimbi, Mubarak etc, and what happened to them can even happen to Bingu. Our fellow policemen, for how long are you going to be used and continue staying in those toilet houses? Come on Malawi, there was alot of time to avoid these things, and its unfortunate that docile Malawians have gone that far, stop bootlicking, stop experimenting Malawi is not a laboratory but a republic, let us all work together with integrity for the common good of Malawi
enough is enough we are angry, this has been going on for too long, look at the filling station ques, no forex, things are going up every day! wamutharika must just go! just step down we dont need you
You and your chidren will cry and suffer soon, lets keep on
I do not think the problems we are facing can be changed by the lecture nor the demo. But what we want is this that life in Malawi should be good to everyone not only those in DPP, or from a certain ethnical back ground. The issue is malawians have eyes and ears. They know what is going around. Vuwa & Ntaba are over enjoying, no wonder when speaking to cash strapped malawians, they think we are all kids. For a person to lead a dignified life, s/he needs more than MK50,000.00 per month as salary. I know ur economy is small. But why are DPP members leading the lives of rich american elites? To opposition members, if the cause of the demo is to bail out the poor, bravo. but if it is to satisfy ur political needs, shame. Civil socie, if u need more funds from donors at the expense of the poor voters, shame.
Enough is enough yet you detroying someone’s property. We know before that that demo was aiming at kuba mwa upandu. Nosense!!!!!! You will be killed for sure ndinu akuba you demonstrating for an aim of kuba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Banzoo, wa kuba di Bingu and his fellow DDP. We are just expressing our anger.
If you are of those A kuba then we dont care todestroy properties of those who are enjoying our tax money. Muli and Bingu own Nation Buses. After all why calling them nation Buses? they are not owned by Malawi. One thing I can understand why they are called Nation buses is the money which was used to purchase the buses may be is our tax money and using the nation name. People of Malawi suffered colonial, Dictatorship, Corruption Muluzi and another dictator Bingu who want us to accept his brother. Why should we? Di dnot pick him, Muluzi did. May be we made a mistake to vote for him second period, but thanks for JB who helped him and he is a cheater and continues to cheat. Has his mother never tought him not to cheat?? A thief and a cheater go togegther. He is a shame to Malawi. we are honnest people and peaceful. Now we are pushed to far. Nothing will make us believe him. He is a president without people´s love and respect. He step down as a man otherwise he will one day go like Gbagbo.
How can a leader asking demonstrators that “by demonstrating will not bring fuel”
This man does not know how to speak diplomatic. He speaks like an ordinary person without education. What a pity. He has put himself very low. His and also given bad example tothose who are educated to day. People will not have respect for educated people because of what they have seen. This Bingu government has educated people but they are all opportunities. People without pride in their field. Only those who are prof. at universities and other work are proud people. What does education means for Africans???? I understand why COMESA fired Bingu. They saw he was useless and we Malawians took him as our leader. We should have checked especially Muluzi. He has contributed to all the problems Malawians are facing to day. He hated Malewezi who should have candidated for presidential post 2004. He someone people hardly had known. What business did Muluzi negatiate with Bingu??? Will never know. These two they had Malawi as their own Business. How can a man who has failed in both bringing up his children and in international work rule a country??? ASK yourself Malawians. Peter is 72 year another old Muntharika. To be a professor does not mean the brain does not get old. We all get old.
BINGU is a strong man like Gadaffi
