Bingu rewards trigger-happy police officers

Bingu rewards trigger-happy police officers, 100% based on 1 rating

By Lusubilo Sichali

LILONGWE (Malawi Democrat) –Police officers who carried out massacre of innocent civilians who were protesting against deteriorating political, social and economic situation in Malawi on July 20 and 21 have been rewarded with two nights’ duty allowance with orders from President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Duty allowance outside normal and official duty was recently raised from K2, 000 per night to K6, 000. This means that the rewarded police officers received K12, 000 each. It is not clear how many plice officers were “thanked” but 18 people were recorded  dead during the July 20, 2011 mass protests in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga.

“The leadership has done this to encourage other officers to shoot to kill should other protests erupt. But I don’t think the K12, 000 is worthy killing an innocent citizen of the country who is only but crying foul of a creeping dictatorship,” said a Lilongwe-based commissioner of police, preferring anonymity for fear of reprisals.

He said most of the said police officers are likely to be promoted to senior ranks as the process of promoting police officers across the country is being currently carried out.

State vice president Joyce Banda, whose People’s Party (PP) has been officially registered by the registrar of political parties, visited  families of riot victims in Ndirande Malabada. She was accompanied by her husband, retired Chief Justice Richard Banda and senior executive members of PP.

Banda, whose call on government to respect people’s constitutional right to demonstrate has attracted Wa Mutharika’s threats of arrest, said she was saddened by the death of the innocent individuals when the protests were meant to be peaceful.

Commenting on the rewarded police officers, PP national publicity director, Mr Stephen Mwenye said in Blantyre that if it were really true that the country’s leadership had thanked some Malawians for killing fellow Malawians, then “it is madness of highest degree”, saying families had “lost loved ones that they will never see again”.

LIVE BULLETS: Malawi police attack civilians

He said PP, whose motto is “unity; equity; and development” will at an appropriate time hold accountable those authorizing reward for murderers, saying they are closely monitoring the unfolding events.

This is biased and immature journalism. Much as we dont approve DPPs mode of governance, I expect you to be impartial and professional. Give all parties equal coverage, its too premature to publicise PP as saints, you can do better

Dziko lathu, mwina u r not aware that these police people assaulted these journalists on the 20th. Nde ma journalistwo adzipitako bwanji kukafunsa zithu? The gov is currently working very hard to keep Nyasa times offline and they closed the radio stations the other day. would u kindly tell me how their ‘opinions’ wld be aired or publicised by the very same people they are assaulting and attacking?

The gov has Vuwa, Ntaba, MBC, the guardian etc to promote its views. We will go there if we want to know what they have to say. When I want to know everything else, I come here

I dont see how PP is being publicised as saints. The guy was just mentioning what the VP did regarding the victims of the police FORCE which the government is rewarding for injuring and killing the Malawian people- yes- the tax payers

You can not be a hero by killing innocent people who were not armed. these police should not be police in next government. they should also charged of murder. Military who are in war they go to court if they kill un armed people.
It is very un professional to kill young people when they are demonstration. Malawi police are not well trained. and are savages. The must be a good college school for police so that their lank should considered as graduates. Discipline must be number one. Malawi police are called thieves. No one respect a police in Malawi. When Bingu says to them your salary is on the road was even worse. He puts them very low down. This Bingu has no respect ao any Malalawians. How can a devil like this one be a leader of a very friendly country?? It is only Muluzi who can answer this question.

Dziko lathu, your reasoning is faulty. The scribe is just reporting what has happened. If you think the facts are not right, correct them. If you think the facts portray PP in good light then you can’t do anything about it. The PP may have faults, but those are certainly not portrayed in this article. “What you don’t know doesn’t exist.” That’s an old English proverb, I think.

MK12000 really bought lives of 19 brave Malawians. Shame to you murderers. What satisfaction do you get killing a fellow human being in cold blooded? Malawi is ruled by mafia.

I am not supplied. Bingu is a murder. There are rumours that he was involved in Rwanda genecide. If this is true Bingu is buying a ticket to Haque. You can not pay police for killing. No country reward a police for killing un armed young man. Not even Kamuzu Banda did this. WHO IS BINGU?? IS HE A REAL MALAWIAN OR SOMEONE WHO SAW MALAWI AS A FORTUNE LAND. Banda LOVED MALAWI.
WHAT DID MULUZI DO TO GIVE THIS MAN OUR COUNTRY AND US TO HIM? HOW MUCH DID MULUZI GOT IN EXCHANGE? MULUZI SHOULD ANSWER THIS. IA MA SURE THE TRUTH WILL COME UP. MUNTHARIKA DID NOT GET THIS OR WAS NOT PICKED BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST MAN BUT HE PAID SOMETHING TO MULUZI.

It is normal for civil servants to get allowances when they spend nights out. Nyasatimes has total mispresented facts. Enanu simukudziwa malamulo aboma……the writer of the story need to be proffessional. We appreciate the good work nyasatimes is doing but if you will be giving us these half baked stories then you are going back to those days when people could not trust your stories. It is no JB´s problem. and she is not taking advantage. Of-Course in politics one take advantage of a weak one. this time it is Bingu. Before Bingu wa taking advantage of JB, by intimadating her, humilate her, insulting her and treat her without respect. Now it is turning on him. WHAT GOES ROUND COMES ROUND.
