Police arrest six Mzuzu University students

MZUZU (ZBS)- Police have arrested six Mzuzu University students for blocking the M1 road as they were protesting against MSB’s criteria of approving tuition fees and stationery allowances to needy students.
Mzuzu Police Spokesperson Sergeant Edward Longwe said the arrested students have been charged with conduct likely to cause breath of peace and malicious damage.
“The students blocked the M1 road from Mzuzu to Karonga during their demonstrations and we have arrested six of them,” said Sergeant Longwe
During the protest there were running battles between the police and the students a development that later caused traffic jam on the busiest road in the region.
Sergeant Longwe indicated that they have also received a complaint that one of the vehicles has been damaged by the irate students.
A student who spoke on condition of anonymity said the student community is expected to hold a meeting where a way forward on how to present their grievances to the Malawi Savings Bank would be discussed.
The arrested students are Patrick Nkhoma aged 20, Meckson Manda 23, Dumusani Shawa 21, Mike Kamunthu 23, Rodrick Nhango 27, Simon Chikumba.
