Malawi Diaspora Forum meets UK officials to seek support

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 | Post By

LONDON (Malawi Democrat) – Malawi Diaspora Forum UK chapter met officials of the Britain’s Foreign Office in London in the aftermath of blood demonstrations that left around 19 people dead and received assurances from London that it will put more pressure on President Bingu wa Mutharika’s administration by supporting civil society groups and the media in Malawi to consolidate the economic and political gains made in recent years.

According to a report in The Nation newspaper, the Forum representatives, Mr Ben Chiza Mkandawire, Mr Thom Chiumia and Mr Edgar Chibaka, said they met head of the southern African section Aidan Liddle and Amanda Archer desk officer for Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

“We had a good meeting with the British government officials and after we presented our case, they assured us that they will help make sure that Malawi does not lose the economic and political gains made in recent years,” said Mkandawire.

The report quoted Chiumia who said they discussed the recent demonstrations, the past and ongoing threats to NGO leaders.

“We also did ask them not to punish Malawians for the sins of one man…the aid freeze will hurt the poor more than the President and his cronies,” Chiumia said.

In response, the British government officials said they will still channel most of their support to the education and health sector.

The officials, however, could not be drawn to comment on the meeting.

The British government last week said security forces were linked to the deaths of at least 18 people during the clashes

Britain, Malawi’s biggest bilateral donor, withdrew its budget support commitments last week effectively rendering government without any meaningful foreign receipts for this year’s national budget, always dependent on handouts.

I dont think giving Aid to Malawi will help poor Malaiwans but will give bingu and his DDP more power. Poor people are used in this Aid. There have been Aid coming to Malawi but what the country is Bankrupt despite Aid. Where the money go. Bingu bought a private jet plane with the money meant for the country. After all Bingu says we are sovereign country and can do without Aid so lets see how Bingu can do without Aid? There must be a change in Aid going to poor people. This Aid should not be given to the government but an organization. It will be easy to control and check when the money is missused. After all why givinng the government? They can use tax payers money with their development. We are SOVEREIGN. Donors give them money they take it and share among themselves tobuild their businesses. All cabinet and Mps have businesses. Before they did not have these businesses. How can work for the people who does not pay him when he can work for himself? Poor people will always be poor. Help does not reach them as it should.
