MCHINJI (Times) -People in parts of Mchinji district have been eating dog meat thinking it was lamb after Yohane Nyelere allegedly killed dogs and sold the meat to the unsuspecting public.
Mchinji police has confirmed the arrest of Nyelere on suspicion that he went about buying dogs which he then killed, skinned and sold to the public.
Police spokesperson for Mchinji district Moses Nyirenda said that the 22-year-old suspect had been buying live dogs at K900 each before killing them and disposing of their heads.
Police say they were tipped off when people became suspicious as the suspect allegedly kept bringing meat to the market but without heads and skins “as is the tradition in the area”
“The tradition is that when an animal is slaughtered for purposes of sale, the seller hangs the head and skin for people to see. This has not been the case with this person and suspicions grew about the way he was conducting his business. On Wednesday, the suspect killed his own dog and sold it at Nkanda Trading Centre,” said Nyirenda.
“By that time a quarter of the meat had been sold. Nyelere escaped arrest but was later apprehended by community policing members who brought him to police,” said Nyirenda.
Nyirenda said that upon further investigations, police were led to a secluded place the suspected used for skinning the dogs where they found a decomposing head and sin of a dog.
Nyelere hails from Namasau village in Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba. He is expected to appear in court on Monday April 16.
In China kanyenya wa galu is a delicacy but not in Malawi. In December last year Police in Blantyre arrested a creative young entrepreneur Cassim from Safarawo in Ndirande for allegedly selling spicy roasted dog meat.
